About Student Learning
Recent
research has highlighted the complex nature of learning. Students need a
range of skills to operate effectively in the emerging knowledge society,
and so it is important that definitions of successful learning include what
students learn (academic and non-academic learning), how teaching facilitates
learning and the teaching-learning relationship, matching teaching strategies
to learning styles and student needs, how learning is assessed and the learning
environment. This is true in primary, secondary, post-compulsory and specialist
environments.
Learning is also greatly dependent on how students feel about themselves and how they relate to their learning environment. The integration of curriculum content and delivery, pedagogical practice, assessment processes, reporting procedures and student wellbeing is essential for effective student learning to occur. Education and training providers need to shape their programs with this in mind to make sure that what is learned is essential and empowering for students to move into the emerging knowledge society.
