Case study focus

This case study showcases the use of Learning Objects and how they can enhance the use of Interactive Whiteboards in schools. The case study will assist schools who have purchased Interactive Whiteboards to develop e-learning projects around the use of Learning Objects, with a focus on:

  • Effective use of an Interactive Whiteboard
  • Teaching and Learning using Learning Objects
  • Student Engagement using Learning Objects
  • Improved student outcomes using Interactive Whiteboards and Learning Objects.

What aspect of best practice will be the focus of the case study?

This case study focuses on Learning Objects that can successfully enhance the use of Interactive Whiteboards in the teaching and learning process.

The case study provides a list of Learning Objects linked to a range of learning areas that facilitate student use of Interactive Whiteboards. The activities focus on student engagement, and how to develop positive learning experiences for all children that will result in improved learning outcomes.

The case study provides teachers with strategies, resources, examples and testimonials of successful practices and the underpinning pedagogy to develop their own programs.

How does the case study intend to showcase or demonstrate best practice?

The case study showcases a range of successful activities that have been trialled in the classroom at Lowanna College. The aims, outcomes and core beliefs of our project are highlighted, along with outcomes and models, which are linked to student and teacher testimonials.

The case study has been developed as an interactive multimedia site, which enables teachers from across the state to use the resource to further develop their own practices.

A major component of the case study will be a range of activities, resources and strategies which support Learning Objects currently available to all schools in Victoria.

The form of the case study

The case study has been developed as a website using Macromedia Dreamweaver. The site contains linked pages that reference trialled activities that incorporate Learning Objects and their use with Interactive Whiteboards. Additional resources, references and content have also be linked.

The use of video and text testimonials by teachers and students will also be featured. The video testimonials will be developed using Windows Movie Maker, and be in a low bandwidth format for fast download. Short clips of students using the Interactive whiteboard and Learning Objects will also be featured.

What multimedia and/or online tools have been used?

Macromedia Dreamweaver, Windows Movie Maker, Macromedia Fireworks

Engagement and benefits

The website has eye catching graphical design and information rich content. It contains a range of best practice activities and resources combined with student and staff testimonials. The use of short videos will enhance communication, along with digital images and audio interviews. There is also an email link for teachers to enquire further or to seek additional resources.

The case study is of significant value to teachers who are looking for engaging activities to undertake on Interactive Whiteboards. It will focuses on the teacher pedagogy and the use of Interactive Whiteboards to enhance teaching and learning. It will also be of value to schools who are trying to decide on the value of Interactive Whiteboards or/and the use of Learning Objects. Schools looking to further incorporate technology into the classroom and to improve student engagement will also find the case study of great value.

There is very little research in Australia on the effective use of Interactive Whiteboards and Learning Objects and this study will inspire and encourage other teachers to develop similar successful projects and programs.
