Lilydale
High School Leopard Project
For ten weeks students will track an individual leopard using data posted
on the MunYaWana
Leopard Project website. They plot this information on a large scale
map to monitor their leopard’s movements and work out its territory
size. Students will also receive photographs of leopards from a camera trapping
survey. The students identify individual leopards and use this detail and
the survey area to calculate the local leopard density.
Case study focus
In
collaboration with another colleague in the Science department, I will be
producing a photo story about students in a VCE Environmental Science unit
who will be conducting research via webcam on leopards in Africa. They will
be researching daily locations of the leopards in wildlife. The technology
they will be using to assist them is a camera trap survey. This activity
has been set up in association with Monash University and the MunYaWana
Leopard Project.
What aspect of best practice will be the focus of the case study?
Students carried out a variety of activities to complete this case study, which was captured digitally to make the photo story. Students will be working in groups using a variety of information technology tools such as the Internet, webcams, GPS tracking. Each group will have a management plan in which they can offer advice about the conservation of these animals.
How does the case study intend to showcase or demonstrate best practice?
We would hope that this exciting event will be captured in the local media or even in the state press. Students will also be lucky to have a guest speaker, from Monash University come out and speak to them. It combines e-learning with theory to engage and stimulate the students.
The form of the case study
Through out this activity we will be capturing students in this unit using digital cameras. With the images collected we will be producing a digital photo story of the activity. Photo Story helps create exciting video stories by panning and zooming effects on the pictures. It will have images of students using the internet, students working in their groups, poster work, and images of the guest speaker. Music will be included into the story to create atmosphere and make it more engaging.

Engagement and benefits
Technology is a priority for the school and developing a case study using Photo Story will make this project engaging for all to view. Simple straight forward language will make the case study easy to understand.
This project will benefit a number of people. Not only will the students be enriched by the activity themselves but also the conservation of the leopards. This project can be an Ambassador to other schools’ by promoting best practice through the case study being placed on the website, through students, teachers and scientists involved in this project being prepared to talk to other schools about it.
